Our Participation

At SasAqua, we support United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and we are proud to be part of a sustainable future. Although we work with a majority of the goals in the daily running of our business, we have chosen the below six goals in order to focus our efforts:

SDG4 – Quality Education

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Bayrise supports educational activities amongst the vulnerable population in the surrounding communities. We donate books, desks, reading solar lamps and other vitals that would spur learning.

SDG5 – Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls:

Fishing in the Lake region has in the past predominantly undertaken by men whilst women are the main labor force in processing and selling. As a result, our commercialization of fishing through cage farming has the possibility of contributing to power imbalance rather than enhancing gender parity. As a social enterprise company, Bayrise is assisting women to also own their cages, and host and operate for them with our best practices in our farm. This allows them to be their own bosses for income generation that will improve their livelihoods through access to education, health services and re-investments.

SDG8 – Economic growth & decent work for all

Roughly half the world’s population still lives on the equivalent of about US$2 a day. And in too many places, having a job doesn’t guarantee the ability to escape from poverty.

At Bayrise, we support local aquaculture out grower farmers, women, and youth by giving them the seeds, feeds, training, and technology they need to succeed in self-employment. 70% of our employees are youth. We assist them in obtaining public and private grant funding that will allow them to acquire their own cages that we help them manage in our fish farm, using our proven sustainable aquaculture best practices.

SDG12 – Sustainable consumption & production:

Sustainable consumption and production aim at “doing more and better with less,” increasing net welfare gains from economic activities by reducing resource use, degradation, and pollution along the whole lifecycle, while increasing quality of life.

We are excited to produce a high-quality animal protein with a relatively small environmental impact. In the world of aquaculture, there is much talk of ‘feed conversion ratios’ (FCRs), or the amount of feed it takes to generate an equivalent weight in body mass. In short, it is a ratio of ‘feed in’ to ‘food out’. Tilapia is a highly efficient converter of feed into body mass, and eclipses other types of animals typically raised for meat.

SDG14 – Conserve and restore marine areas

Our rainwater, drinking water, weather, climate, coastlines, much of our food, and even the oxygen in the air we breathe, are all ultimately provided and regulated by the sea. Throughout history, oceans and seas have been vital conduits for trade and transportation.

As a commercial aquaculture company, one of our foremost concerns is water quality. This is both for environmental as well as business reasons: If the water in/around our cages is not of the highest quality, this has a direct impact on our production. As such, we have both a philosophical reason, as well as a vested interest in promoting sound stewardship of life below water.

SDG17 – Strengthen global partnerships for sustainable development

A successful sustainable development agenda requires partnerships between governments, the private sector and civil society

We work with different stakeholders including donors, research institutions, government, NGO partners, civil society organizations, the communities who live in and around our operations and even our competitors to address value chain challenges of mutual benefits. If you or your organization would like to learn more about our partnership initiatives for potential collaborative opportunities, please get in touch.
